The 1960 Post Cereal cards were issued on the backs of Grape Nuts Flakes cereal boxes and measure 7″ x 8-3/4″. These full-color cut cards are quite rare and their side panels with player bios are even rarer.
The design resembles a color photograph placed within a wooden “frame” that served as the border. The reverse of each card is blank though the side panel of each box was printed with additional information about each athlete.
There are 9 total in the set with 2 basketball players - Bob Cousy and Bob Pettit.
Five players in the set - Mantle, Drysdale, Kaline, Mathews, and Unitas - appeared only on the 12 oz. packages, while three players - Killebrew, Cousy, and Pettit - appeared on the larger 16 oz. boxes. The 9 player Frank Gifford appeared on both. Cards from the two box sizes are slightly different, including differences in how the pictures are cropped and in the positioning of the facsimile signature on the image.
The boxes were produced in January and February of 1960 meaning the boxes would have been on grocery shelves nationwide during the early months of 1960.
